Ashoke Sen becomes first Indian to receive the Oskar Klein Medal

Bengaluru theoretical physicist Ashoke Sen has received the 2026 Oskar Klein Medal, the first Indian physicist to win it, the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) announced on 22 October 2026. According to ICTS, Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics award the medal every year. Sen gave the Oskar Klein Memorial Lecture in Stockholm the same day.
Syllabus: Prelims · Current Affairs & IR; Prelims · Science & Technology; GS3 · Science & Technology
Why this matters for UPSC
GS3 covers achievements of Indians in science and technology. Prelims can ask who awards the Oskar Klein Medal, what string theory and S-duality are, and where TIFR sits; GS3 Mains, why basic research in theoretical physics matters.
Why it matters
A science student in a small Indian town rarely sees an Indian name on the list of the world's top physics prizes. When a researcher working in Bengaluru gets a medal tied to the body that picks the Physics Nobel, it shows that frontier theory can be done from Indian institutes, not only abroad. That helps such institutes keep and attract young researchers who might otherwise leave. The larger question is how much a country should spend on basic research, such as the search for one theory of gravity and quantum physics. Its payoff is knowledge first, and technology only much later, if at all.
Prelims pointers
- Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences: founded 1739; awards the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry and the Prize in Economic Sciences.
- Dirac Medal: given by the ICTP every year since 1985, announced on 8 August, Dirac's birthday, for contributions to theoretical physics.
- ICTP: located in Trieste, Italy; governed by the IAEA, Italy and UNESCO; a UNESCO Category 1 Institute.
- TIFR: founded 1945 with support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, under Homi Bhabha's vision; main campus Mumbai, centres in Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
- ICTS Bengaluru: approved by the TIFR Council in August 2007 as a multidisciplinary centre for theoretical sciences.
- Klein-Nishina formula (1928): Oskar Klein and Yoshio Nishina used the Dirac equation to describe how radiation scatters off an electron.
Practise a UPSC-style question
With reference to the Oskar Klein Medal, consider the following statements:
1. It is awarded every year by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.
2. It is named after a Swedish theoretical physicist whose name is attached to the Klein-Gordon equation.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- (a) 1 only
- (b) 2 only
- (c) Both 1 and 2
- (d) Neither 1 nor 2
Show the answer
Answer: (b) 2 only
Answer: (b) 2 only. The medal comes from Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics, not from the ICTP.
Statement 1: incorrect. Stockholm University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' Nobel Committee for Physics award it each year, since 1988; the ICTP gives the Dirac Medal.
Statement 2: correct. It honours Oskar Klein, Sweden's best-known theoretical physicist, who in 1926 published the first relativistic version of the Schroedinger wave equation, the Klein-Gordon equation.
Eliminate: Statement 1 credits the medal to the wrong body, so it is wrong. Out: (a), (c).
Eliminate: Statement 2 holds, since the medal carries Oskar Klein's name. Out: (d).
Trap: Swapped attribution. Both the ICTP and Stockholm University give named medals in theoretical physics, and the question pins the Oskar Klein Medal on the Trieste centre that gives the Dirac Medal.
Remember: Oskar Klein Medal: Stockholm University with the Nobel Committee for Physics, since 1988.
