World Bank raises India's FY27 growth forecast to 7.1%

The World Bank on October 6 raised India's FY27 GDP growth forecast to 7.1% from 6.6%, citing resilient domestic demand, stronger industry and robust exports. Its India Development Update flagged risks from high oil prices, a possible El Niño rainfall deficit and volatile capital flows, and focused on artificial intelligence as a productivity lever.

Why it matters
The World Bank now expects India's economy to grow faster this financial year than it earlier predicted, despite the conflict in West Asia and costlier oil. Faster growth tends to support jobs, incomes and tax revenue for public services. The report also finds India better protected from outside shocks than in 2013, with a far smaller gap between its foreign payments and earnings, and record foreign exchange reserves. Yet it warns that high oil prices could push up inflation, and a larger El Niño-linked rainfall shortfall could cut farm output and raise food prices. On artificial intelligence, it does not, so far, predict mass job losses in India, though it expects the effects to be uneven.
