Why it matters
An Indian firm selling cotton garments in Canada pays customs duty there, and an Indian importer pays duty on Canadian pulses. A trade agreement that lowers those duties would make such goods cheaper on both sides, though Indian farmers who grow pulses would face more competition. The services part matters as much: India sells telecommunications, computer and business services to Canada, and Canada hosts over 425,000 Indian students, by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's count. For Canada, India is a way to depend less on the United States market. For India, the deal is one of several being negotiated at once, so what it concedes to Canada will be watched by other partners.
