PM Internship Scheme: the 2024 design and the 2026 revamp
Why in news: By October 2026, over 30,000 candidates had joined the third PMIS pilot round that followed the March 2026 revamp.

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), run by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, places young people in paid internships with large companies and aims at one crore opportunities over five years. A March 2026 revamp raised the monthly stipend from Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000, and over 30,000 candidates have since joined its third pilot round.
Syllabus: GS3 · Indian Economy & Growth; GS3 · Inclusive Growth; Prelims · Economy & Social Development
Why this matters for UPSC
GS3 (employment, inclusive growth) and GS2 (government schemes): Prelims can ask the PMIS's ministry, aim, beneficiaries, stipend split and eligibility; Mains, whether paid internships can raise youth employability.
In short
The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), a Ministry of Corporate Affairs scheme from the Union Budget 2024-25, offers youth paid workplace experience, but its pilots struggled to keep interns.
The PMIS will succeed on completed internships and jobs, not posted openings; the 2026 changes fix pay and length, but local placements must follow.
Why it matters
For a school-leaver or a graduate from a small town, a paid internship in a large company can be the first line on a CV and a bridge to a regular job. Under the old terms many interns quit, because the money rarely covered rent, food and travel in a new city and a full year away from home was a long commitment. Better pay, shorter terms and more employers, including smaller firms, make an offer easier to accept and finish. Fewer dropouts also mean public money buys completed internships rather than empty seats. The larger question is India's young workforce: a scheme can open a door, but jobs follow only if employers value what interns learn.
Prelims pointers
- Implementing ministry: the Ministry of Corporate Affairs runs the PMIS through its online portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in; in the 2024 pilot a candidate could apply for up to five opportunities.
- Target: one crore internships in five years; the pilot aimed at 1.25 lakh internships in FY 2024-25.
- Funding split (2024 design): Rs 4,500 a month from the Centre into an Aadhaar-seeded bank account, Rs 500 from the company's CSR funds; training costs borne by the company.
- Exclusions (2024 pilot): graduates of IITs, IIMs, National Law Universities, IISERs, NIDs and IIITs; CA, MBA or master's degree holders; a family member earning over Rs 8 lakh.
- Work rule (2024 design): at least half the internship is spent in a real job setting, not a classroom; a company may place interns with suppliers or group firms.
- Insurance: PMIS interns are covered by two Jan Suraksha schemes launched in 2015, with the premium paid by the government.
- Outreach partner: MY Bharat (Mera Yuva Bharat) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Practise a UPSC-style question
With reference to the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), consider the following statements:
1. It is implemented by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
2. It was announced in the Union Budget 2024-25 with an aim of one crore internships over five years.
3. Partner companies for its pilot were first identified by their average CSR spending over the previous three years.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- (a) 1 and 2 only
- (b) 2 and 3 only
- (c) 1 and 3 only
- (d) 1, 2 and 3
Show the answer
Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only
Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only. The scheme is run by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, not the skilling ministry.
Statement 1: incorrect. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs implements the PMIS and runs its portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in.
Statement 2: correct. The Union Budget 2024-25 announced the scheme with a target of one crore internships in five years.
Statement 3: correct. The top 500 companies were picked on average corporate social responsibility (CSR) spending over the last three years.
Eliminate: statement 1 is wrong, since the PMIS belongs to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Out: (a), (c), (d).
Trap: Swapped attribution. A skilling scheme sounds as if it belongs to the skilling ministry, so the question pins the PMIS on it.
Remember: PMIS = Ministry of Corporate Affairs; top companies chosen by CSR spending.
